Community Public Health Skills Development Scheme
A unique Community Public Health skills development scheme is being funded over the next four years by NHS South West, and is about to enter its second year. It has primarily been aimed at those in Local Authorities working either at practitioner or strategic levels in planning infrastructure and developments, housing and neighbourhoods, transport or leisure services. However, this year the scheme is available to those working in criminal justice / offender management settings, and community and voluntary sector organisations. The scheme provides funding for individuals to develop public health skills and competencies, to increase public health capacity and capability within organisations in conjunction with Directors of Public Health.
Accepted nominees receive a bursary from the South West Strategic Health Authority to fund their tuition fees on a full-time or part-time basis. Additional professional support is provided through local public health teams, local public health networks and the Department of Health South West. All other costs remain a matter for the employer and staff member. The major provider of this training in the South West is the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, although there is also provision for public health courses to be undertaken at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD) Graduate School for those who are unable to travel to UWE. UWE offers a flexible range of public health courses ranging from MSc, Post Graduate Diploma or Post Graduate Certificate. Stand-alone public health modules are also available for continuing professional development. These begin in September of each year and fuller details and the application form are attached. Further details are also available from Jane Powell (jane.powell@uwe.ac.uk) or Judy Orme (judy.orme@uwe.ac.uk) at the University of the West of England, or from Sharon McNeil (sharon.mcneil@pms.ac.uk) at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD) Graduate School. To proceed with an application, applicants must seek support and nomination from their line manager and their local Director of Public Health. Details of Course Info
